St. Petersburg, affectionately known as St. Pete, was founded in 1888 by John C. Williams and Peter Demens. The city is named after St. Petersburg, Russia, the birthplace of Demens. Pinellas County, originally part of Hillsborough County, became an independent entity in 1912. This separation was driven by the need for better governance and representation for the residents of the peninsula.
