Can migraine sufferers apply for Social Security disability?

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2020 | Uncategorized |

Any Florida resident who suffers from migraines knows just how debilitating these headaches can be. To some, it may even seem unfitting to refer to them simply as headaches because they can cause nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sounds, and almost paralyzing pain at times. For many individuals who experience migraines regularly, it can be difficult to keep up with daily routines, including going to work. As a result, they may wonder whether they could qualify for Social Security disability.

Though Social Security Disability Insurance can offer much-needed benefits to those who qualify, it is immensely difficult to receive approval from the Social Security Administration in order to receive those benefits. In fact, many first-time applicants receive denials from the SSA, and requesting assistance for conditions like migraines is an even trickier process. This difficulty results largely because the SSA does not consider migraines as a distinct disability.

If those who are suffering from migraines are feeling out of luck, it is important to remember that there is no harm in applying for benefits. In fact, many may find that they can show the following qualifying information:

  • Their migraines are a Medically Determinable Impairment that will last or has lasted at least a year and causes limitations in regard to employment.
  • Their migraines prevent them from working and from earning a livable income.
  • They have evidence showing the level of impairment caused by their migraines.

Of course, even if individuals feel that they have provided ample information and evidence of their condition, they could still face a denial for Social Security disability benefits. However, that does not mean it is the end of the line. Florida residents suffering from migraines may have the ability to appeal the SSA’s decision and work toward a more favorable outcome.
