Biography

Douglas G. Jackson, known as Doug, is a St. Petersburg attorney and the founder, President, and Managing Attorney of The Law Firm of Douglas G. Jackson, P.A. He represents and leads a legal team serving individuals, families, veterans, entrepreneurs, property owners, and businesses throughout St. Petersburg, the Tampa Bay area, and beyond.

Doug founded the firm on the belief that legal problems rarely occur in isolation. A business disagreement may implicate a contract, lease, ownership interest, real estate issue, estate plan, or potential lawsuit. A family’s immediate legal problem may also affect its home, business, finances, benefits, or long-term security. For that reason, Doug has developed the firm as a modern general-practice and community law firm—one capable of serving as a client’s First Counsel™ and helping determine both the immediate legal response and the broader path forward.

A Career Beginning With Disability and Veterans Advocacy

Doug began his legal career assisting people with disabilities, including United States military veterans, in pursuing the benefits and financial support that could materially improve their quality of life. That work required more than understanding statutes, regulations, medical evidence, and administrative procedures. It required listening carefully to clients whose experiences were not always fully reflected in their records and helping decision-makers understand the human consequences behind a claim.

Veterans disability advocacy remains an important part of Doug’s work and the firm’s mission. Doug is accredited to represent claimants before the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. He has also represented individuals pursuing Social Security disability benefits.

Over time, clients increasingly turned to Doug for assistance with legal problems extending beyond disability claims. The firm expanded to address business law and litigation, civil disputes, estate planning and probate, commercial real estate, personal injury, family matters, criminal defense, and other legal needs affecting individuals and businesses. That development ultimately shaped the firm’s First Counsel™ approach: clients should have a trusted legal relationship before a crisis occurs, not merely search for an unfamiliar lawyer after each new problem arises.

Serving Businesses as an Attorney and Fellow Business Owner

Doug approaches business representation not only as an attorney, but also as the founder and operator of a growing business. He understands that business owners must make decisions involving revenue, staffing, contracts, leases, vendors, partnerships, systems, cash flow, risk, succession, and growth—often at the same time.

His economics and business education, law-firm management experience, and extensive involvement in St. Petersburg’s business community allow him to evaluate legal issues within the larger realities of operating a business. The objective is not simply to identify what the law permits. It is to help clients understand their options, evaluate risk, protect what they have built, and choose a practical course of action.

This perspective is central to the firm’s work with entrepreneurs, established companies, professionals, property owners, and closely held businesses. Whether a client needs a contract drafted, a commercial lease reviewed, a business dispute evaluated, a partnership problem addressed, or ongoing outside general counsel, Doug believes legal advice should support the client’s broader operational and financial objectives.

Leadership in St. Petersburg’s Business Community

Doug currently serves as President of the EDGE Business District Association, the nonprofit organization responsible for planning, promoting, advocating for, and supporting St. Petersburg’s historic EDGE District. The EDGE’s work includes economic vitality, business assistance, district promotion, development review, streetscape improvements, community engagement, historic preservation, public art, and collaboration with local government and community stakeholders.

As EDGE President, Doug works with business owners, property owners, residents, civic leaders, and community partners to strengthen the district and create opportunities for businesses to connect and grow. He also helps lead the EDGE Insights Club, a recurring business-growth roundtable focused on practical subjects such as revenue, finance, operations, scaling, professional relationships, and referrals.

Doug also serves on the 2026 Board of Governors of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Before joining the Board of Governors, he served as Chair of the Chamber’s Ambassadors Council. The Chamber recognized his service by naming him its 2024 Member of the Year, citing his contributions to the organization and the St. Petersburg community.

His community leadership was also recognized through his nomination for the 2024 Most Valuable ’Burger Award, part of the St. Petersburg Chamber’s Good ’Burger Awards honoring individuals and organizations that contribute positively to the city.

Leadership Within the Legal Profession

Doug has served in leadership roles with the St. Petersburg Bar Association, including service on its board and as Chair of its Law Practice Management Section. In 2024, the Association presented him with its Rockin’ Chair of the Year Award in recognition of his leadership of that section. He has also participated in the Association’s Paraclete Editorial Committee and other professional activities intended to strengthen the local legal community.

Doug’s interest in law-practice management reflects his belief that strong legal representation requires more than knowledge of substantive law. Law firms must also develop effective systems, train and support their teams, communicate with clients, use technology responsibly, and create processes that permit legal professionals to perform consistently at a high level.

Building Community Through Education, Relationships, and Service

Doug believes that a law firm should contribute to the community it serves. Through the firm and its community partners, he has helped develop several recurring programs intended to educate business owners, encourage civic engagement, build professional relationships, and create opportunities for service.

The Business Education Network, commonly known as the BEN Workshop, brings business owners, professionals, and community leaders together for education and meaningful relationship-building. The program addresses practical issues affecting growing businesses and creates opportunities for local professionals to share their experience with others.

Lattes with a Lawyer creates a forum for community conversations concerning legal, civic, business, and public-policy issues affecting St. Petersburg. The program is designed to encourage informed dialogue among residents, professionals, public officials, and community leaders.

The firm also organizes recurring community cleanups in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful and community volunteers. These programs reflect Doug’s belief that leadership requires more than holding a title. It requires consistently creating opportunities for people to work together, improve their community, and develop the relationships from which larger progress can grow.

Author and Speaker

Doug is the author of The American Turning Point: How Unity, Liberty, and Courage Can Save Our Nation. The book addresses civic responsibility, community renewal, principled leadership, and the role individuals can play in rebuilding trust and strengthening their communities.

He also speaks, moderates panels, emcees programs, and leads workshops concerning business growth, leadership, civic responsibility, unity, community development, law-firm management, and the practical challenges facing entrepreneurs and professionals. His speaking work is an extension of the same philosophy underlying his law practice and community involvement: durable progress begins when people understand their responsibilities, build productive relationships, and take meaningful action.

Education and Professional Credentials

Doug earned his Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida, in 2012. During law school, he participated in the Honors Program and received recognition for academic performance, professional responsibility, and pro bono service.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Colorado State University, where he studied Economics and Business Administration. While at Colorado State, he served as Chair of the Student Legal Services Advisory Board and as Financial Officer of the University Elections Committee.

Doug was admitted to The Florida Bar in 2012. He is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. He is accredited to represent claimants before the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and is eligible to represent claimants before the Social Security Administration.

A Relationship-Based Approach to Legal Representation

Doug’s professional philosophy is grounded in the understanding that clients are not merely collections of isolated legal issues. Individuals, families, and business owners need attorneys who listen, understand the larger circumstances, identify how different legal problems may overlap, and help develop a practical plan.

As the firm’s founder and Managing Attorney, Doug works to build a collaborative legal team that can evaluate matters from multiple perspectives. Where an issue falls outside the firm’s capabilities, the firm draws upon its relationships with attorneys, business professionals, community organizations, and other trusted resources to help clients identify an appropriate next step.

That is the purpose of serving as First Counsel™: being a trusted first call when a legal concern, business problem, family transition, or unexpected crisis arises.
